The Place of Surrender

“God, I invite your searching gaze into my heart. Examine me through and through; find out everything that may be hidden within me. Put me to the test and sift through all my anxious cares. See if there is any path of pain I’m walking on, and lead me back to your glorious, everlasting way— the path that brings me back to you.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭139‬:‭23‬-‭24‬ ‭TPT‬‬

If we want to make progress in life, self reflection is a tool that will serve us really well. Sometimes, we need to pause and think about where we are going, what’s driving our actions; the real reason why we do some of the things we do or think some of the thoughts we have. Why did we make this decision and not the other? Most decisions we make are driven by our subconscious. It is only by pausing to reflect that we uncover the deeper reason that makes us do the things we do or process things the way we do.

This practice is necessary for success in life. However beyond this, is the practice of taking time out to ask God to search us and reveal to us the things in our lives that are not in keeping with His will or His way. We may not realize that we are harboring some doubts, unbelief, bitterness or offense. When we surrender to the Holy Spirit and ask Him, He will examine us thoroughly. The standard will be God’s perfect standard and not our fallen one. He will sift us through and through and lead us back to the way of God. As Christians, we need to be careful so that we do not miss it. It’s not in our human nature to do the right thing. Even Paul said that the things he wants to do, he finds himself not doing but doing the wrong things (Romans 7:15).

Meditate on the scripture above. This is one of the many reasons David was called a man after God’s heart. He had a deep desire to live in total alignment with God. The Holy Spirit will not impose on us. He will search us if we invite Him to. He will reveal to us everything in us that takes us out of alignment with God. This is the only way that we can consistently walk in line with God. When was the last time you spent time with the Holy Spirit and surrendered to Him asking Him to examine you? I am not talking about coming to God with your shopping list of requests and doing all the talking but just a sitting with the Holy Spirit. Come before Him and make this time about Him and not about you and your wants.

PRACTICE POINTS

1. Meditate on the scripture above

2. Ask the Holy Spirit to search you through and through and reveal to you everything that is hidden in you that offends Him

3. Be willing to ask for His help to change and let go of these things

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, please shine the light of your word into my life. Reveal to me every anxious thought, offense, wicked or any hurtful thought in me. Give me the strength to address them and live in a place of total surrender to you.
