The Disciples' Mission

The Disciples' Mission

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

-Matthew 28:19-20 NLT

For as long as I can remember, I have often heard preachers in the church reinforce the importance of winning souls. As a new believer, I would always question why it was such a big deal. I couldn't even imagine myself going up to people to try to share the Good News with them. Not until I made the decision to do my own research and find out why This was so important.

THE BIG WHY???

….BECAUSE JESUS COMMANDS US TO!

In Matthew 28:19, Jesus commands his disciples “ Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” In John 15:16, Jesus reminds his disciples, “ You did not choose Me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name”. This reminds us that Jesus methodically chose us to build his kingdom by spreading the Good news.

After His resurrection, Jesus made it a point to tell his disciples the importance of spreading the good news. Then He equipped them with the power they needed to succeed. The Cambridge dictionary defines the word ‘Disciple’ as “A person who believes in the ideas and principles of someone famous and tries to live the way that person does or did”. As Christians, we are HIS disciples, we have been tasked to be like Christ and invite others to do the same. As disciples, we are to make more disciples of all nations, meaning people from all walks of life, gender, and ethnicity.

The beautiful thing about this is that Jesus has worked out the hardest part of this mission. He gave us power through the Holy Spirit. He says in Acts 1:8, “ but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria and to the ends of the earth”. The truth is that Jesus knew that the mission He assigned to us is impossible to do on our own. He made provisions by gifting us the power to succeed through the Holy Spirit. As Christ's disciples, we have been filled with the Holy Spirit. Therefore all we need to do is…
